Attending School in Denver

By Sarah Jane Udall

Traditionally a more conservative city, Denver is known for its incredible view of the Rocky Mountains, its close proximity to many outdoor recreational activities, and its friendly, culturally vibrant atmosphere.

City Facts & Stats

As the gateway between the Great Plains and the American West, Denver, Colorado, also known as the "Mile High City," sits in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Unlike it's nickname would suggest, Denver is actually a uniformly flat city, but a mere fifteen miles to the east of the majestic Rockies. Denver's relatively low cost of living, and its many recreational facilities, and over 500 acres of parks and open spaces, make Denver a serene place to live and attend college.

Originally settled as a mining city, today Denver's economy is still largely based on mineral wealth, as well as its role as a commercial and transportation hub, and of course its close proximity to many world-class ski resorts. Denver is somewhat isolated in its location, being the only city of its size within nearly 600 miles, and because such, Denver tends to be a more conservative city. But as a city with a population of almost two million people, there is always something going on in Denver.

Highlights and Attractions

Being spectacularly set in the Rocky Mountains, the mountain panorama visible from Denver is miles long and includes nearly 200 named peaks. And because of its close proximity to the mountains, you are never far from nature in Denver. Each year Colorado receives an average of 300 days of sunshine, and more than 300 inches of snow, making it an absolute outdoor playground year round.

Denver also has a vibrant cultural, and metropolitan feel, and boasts the tenth largest downtown in the U.S. Denver is home to a variety of colorful art galleries, as well as the second largest performing arts center in the nation, both which can enhance your college experience, as well as over 300 restaurants, great shopping, and three professional sports teams that can add to the excitement of living in Denver while you earn your college degree.
